Human, All Too Human

Why does man worship god (the generic god)? Do we worship god for what he(?) truly is? Or is it because we want security from him? If we want security from him, aren't we using him as a means to an end and, thus, he becomes instrumental? If he's omnipotent then why should he put up with all this shit from all of us? If he's omnipotent then who are we to treat him so?

On the other hand, if we truly worship him for what he is (not that we can know for sure what he truly is), then why do we still ask him for all sorts of things? Doesn't that make us truly fucked up since we'll only revert to the situation above?

No no you midread my question. I'm referring to god in the generic sense. Not the judeo-christian one.

Enjoying God's company on his own terms is all well and good. But when it's possible only if they're simple and robust...shielded from threats, not having hang ups about justice and the like...I don't really consider that truly enjoying God's company on his own terms. The true nature of man surfaces only under threat. I find it hard to swallow that God is good for his sake only when all is smooth sailing. We need to overcome this somehow...
